Why Buy Local?

Posted on | May 14, 2010 | 2 Comments

Did you know that by shifting just 10% of your purchases to locally owned businesses, you can create more local jobs, lighten the impact on the environment, expand your shopping and entertainment options, and build a stronger community?

These times are tough for everyone and many communities are feeling the pain, as much of their money comes from sales tax, but when people are not buying, there is little tax revenue.

And let’s add in the fact that auto sales are virtually gone and people cannot get credit to buy cars, which frequently brings in several hundred dollars each time someone buys an auto from a dealership within the area.

What can you do? Well, you can participate in a “Buy Local” program right here in the Biddeford Saco area. “Buy Local” programs and plans always work and they create loyalty amongst local consumers.

Gallup recently did a study showing how consumers and customers became more loyal and had a sense of acceptance and community after such programs were started.

Of course, it seems to be common sense, but then again sometimes you need a “report” or Study to get things going due to economically challenged politicians. Don’t let you city fall victim to a sluggish economy.

And BusinessWeek reported here that:

…for every $100 spent at a locally owned store, $45 remains in the local economy, compared with about $13 per $100 spent at a big box…

There is a lot of evidence to support the facts that Buy Local programs work. This site One Clear Point reports that:

Holiday sales were up for independent business owners, says the 2010 Independent Business Survey, a national survey of over 1,800 independent businesses by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. Up an average of 2.2%, the survey reflects a buying trend on the part of consumers who purposely sought out local retailers for their holiday shopping.

The facts seem clear that promoting a “buy local” attitude is great for local business and consumers alike. So if you are a business owner int he Biddeford Saco area, consider joining the Biddeford Saco Buy Local program.

Sign up only takes a few minutes here and the benefits to you, your business, and your community are incredible.

I applaud your effort to encourage all to buy local. We as a family have made an effort to do this as much as possible, however I did have an eye opening experience with one of your busineses that has left me wondering. How much of a profit is acceptable? About 10 days ago I made a purchase at the local hardware which we have always supported, the one item was $15.19. Three hours later I found myself at homedepot with a friend and saw the exact same item for $8.79. Somethig like this, in this economy, makes one stop and consider where do I shop in the future?
